Coroner confirms ID of Swansea woman who died in weekend shooting
The identity of the woman killed in a Saturday night shooting in Belleville was confirmed Monday by the St. Clair County Coroner’s Office.
St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said Shenandoah Burton, 18, of Swansea, was pronounced dead shortly after midnight Sunday in the emergency room at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. The cause of death was a gunshot wound, Dye said.
A second person, whose identity has not been released, was injured, according to police.
Authorities said a man identified by police as the shooting suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
“At this time, there is no threat to the public,” Swansea Police stated Sunday. “The incident is believed to be isolated, and the individuals involved were known to each other.”
Police officers from Belleville and Swansea responded to the 1700 block of Jamestown Road at about 11:19 p.m. Saturday after reports of multiple shots fired.
According to a news release from Belleville Police, Burton was found deceased in the middle of the road. Two other women were found inside a vehicle in an adjacent parking lot; one had been injured by gunfire, police said.
Belleville Police are leading the homicide investigation. Investigators identified a known acquaintance of the victims as the suspect and broadcast a law enforcement alert for the suspect’s vehicle, according to the release.
The Perry County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Department attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle around 2:30 a.m. Sunday after it was spotted traveling southbound on Interstate 55.
“Prior to law enforcement having contact with the suspect, he took his own life from what is believed to be self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Belleville Police release stated.
Belleville investigators are not currently seeking other suspects, but said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Belleville Police Department Investigations Division at 618-234-1212.
