Coroner IDs man killed in Fairview Heights shooting; police have one in custody
A 47-year-old man was fatally shot late Saturday in Fairview Heights, and police took a suspect into custody a short time later, authorities said.
David L. Weary of 100 Bountiful Drive was pronounced deceased early Sunday at his home, St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said.
Officers were dispatched about 11:55 p.m. to a disturbance in the 100 block of Bountiful Drive. Before they arrived, another caller reported that shots had been fired and someone had been shot, according to a Fairview Heights Police Department news release on Sunday.
Based on a physical description, police spotted the person several blocks away and arrested him without incident, according to the news release. A firearm was recovered.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene after lifesaving measures were attempted, police said. A large crowd gathered, prompting police to request assistance from other law enforcement agencies to help secure the area.
Illinois State Police crime scene services processed the scene for evidence, police said.
Police said the suspect was known to the victim and that no other suspects were being sought.
Fairview Heights detectives continued to investigate and planned to present their findings to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office for review, police said.
An autopsy will be conducted, Dye said.
