Major Case Squad investigators on Monday night identified a 34-year-old Belleville man as the victim of a homicide.
Nathan Funkhouser, who lived in an apartment in the 500 block of North 40th Street, was found dead Sunday, according to Belleville Police Lt. Matt Eiskant.
Eiskant said a friend of Funkhouser’s called police to check on Funkhouser because the friend hadn’t seen him in a while. Police arrived at 9:18 p.m. Sunday.

“We were able to get in with the help of property management,” Eiskant said. “We found (Funkhouser) deceased inside.”
Eiskant said it was apparent to the responding officers that Funkhouser had suffered injuries, but he wouldn’t describe those injuries further.
During an autopsy Monday afternoon, the manner of Funkhouser’s death was ruled a homicide.
Eiskant said around 30 detectives are working the case around the clock. They’re stationed at Belleville Fire Station No. 4 on South Illinois Street.
