After positive COVID tests, Collinsville schools will start year with remote learning

Collinsville Community Unit School District 10 is moving to remote learning after at least two staff tested positive for COVID-19, the district announced Monday night.

The district was supposed to start the school year with a hybrid learning plan, with both remote and in-person components, on Tuesday.

“We are frustrated and saddened by these events,” the district said in a statement. “Our goal has always bee in-person instruction for our students.”

Earlier on Monday, 10 employees in the school district tested positive for coronavirus.

While the release confirmed more than one positive case, the district said it would not comment on an individual case or provide information that may inadvertently identify a person. Phone calls to District 10 Superintendent Mark Skertich have not been returned, as were requests for information concerning which of the districts 15 buildings had infections and how parents were notified.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced new restrictions for the metro-east region on Sunday, after three straight days of an 8% positivity rate. Schools are not impacted by the new restrictions. All but two districts in St. Clair County, Freeburg 77 and Dupo 196, had elected to begin the school year with remote-only lessons.
