A 12-year-old mama dog has raised “countless litters” — and now she waits for a home of her own.

“Charity is currently in need of her forever home, as she deserves more than shelter life at her age,” Kaitlyn Ewing, director of intake, rescue and foster coordination for a North Carolina animal shelter, told McClatchy News in an email. “It is her turn to be the baby!”

The Humane Society of Catawba County said it started caring for Charity in early November. She was surrendered after her owner couldn’t afford to care for her anymore.

“Charity’s story is one of incredible strength and unyielding love,” the shelter wrote Nov. 16 in a Facebook post. “At 12 years old, she came to us from a partner shelter after being surrendered during labor complications. Despite the odds, she survived an emergency C-section, though only one of her puppies made it.”

Chance was the only puppy from Charity’s litter to survive, a North Carolina shelter said.

The pup, named Chance, is “thriving” in a foster home. He’s expected to be available for adoption in January.

Charity, who wasn’t able to raise Chance, has “turned to the comfort of stuffed animals to ‘nurse’ as she heals both physically and emotionally.” She has become known as a “resilient” and loyal senior dog, the shelter wrote on social media.

“She’s gentle, good with other dogs, and will attach herself to her people once she chooses you — a bond that’s unbreakable,” the animal organization wrote. “Charity is the sweetest soul you could ever meet, and her golden years are ready to be filled with love, care, and comfort.”

As of Nov. 20, the shelter’s website listed the mixed-breed dog among the animals available for adoption. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at catawbahumane.org.

The humane society is in the Hickory area, a roughly 50-mile drive northwest from Charlotte.
