A “sweet” dog was saved from being put down after his owner died.

Now, the “mostly blind” pup will need a second chance in a new home, according to a North Carolina animal rescue.

“While he decompresses and gets the medical attention he needs, Benny is learning to trust again,” the Triangle Beagle Rescue wrote on its website. “After taking three days to feel comfortable enough to eat, he’s now enjoying his meals and settling into a safe and loving environment.”

Benny landed at the rescue Dec. 31, after he lost his owner. Family members had surrendered him to a Virginia shelter, where he didn’t have much time left.

“He was just minutes from being euthanized when an amazing animal advocate pulled him and reached out to us, asking if we could welcome him into the rescue,” the Raleigh-area organization wrote in a Facebook post. “We immediately said yes.”

Benny is described as a “smart,” roughly 8-year-old pup who’s either blind or has limited vision. He has to undergo heartworm treatments but could be available for adoption by early March, foster mom Christine Sibona told McClatchy News via email.

“Benny is a gentle, loving boy who leans into every snuggle and turns toward your voice, soaking up affection like it’s the best gift in the world,” the Triangle Beagle Rescue wrote. “He is settling into his loving foster home and will be looking for a forever home in 2025.”

In the meantime, details about the animal organization’s adoption process can be found at tribeagles.org.

“Benny’s journey to TBR has been full of challenges, but his story is one of hope, resilience, and the start of a new chapter,” rescuers wrote.
