‘Quirky’ dog keeps returning to shelter. He needs a permanent home for ‘carefree life’
A “quirky” dog keeps returning to a North Carolina shelter — and now, he needs a patient new owner.
Banjo is up for adoption after he has “struggled” to live inside, according to the Carteret County Humane Society.
“Banjo THRIVES outside, where he can roam, play, and just be himself,” the shelter wrote Jan. 9 in a Facebook post. “He’d be perfect for a farm or large property where he can live his quirky, carefree life without the constraints of being a traditional indoor dog.”
Banjo is waiting for a fresh start after he first arrived at the shelter as a stray in August 2022. He has been adopted and returned twice, most recently due to causing destruction to his owner’s home.
“Since then, Banjo has been fostered multiple times,” but he has “struggled as an indoor dog,” the humane society wrote. “His behaviors — chewing, climbing on furniture, and accidents in the house — make him better suited for an outdoor or indoor/outdoor lifestyle.”
Banjo is described as an 8-year-old treeing walker coonhound who has a “zest for life.” He can’t wait to go on adventures and loves to cuddle after he plays, the shelter wrote in an online adoption profile and an email to McClatchy News.
“Despite his challenges, Banjo is wonderful with kids and other dogs, and he’s ready to share his love with the right family who understands his needs,” the animal organization wrote. “We believe in Banjo. He’s not perfect, but he’s worth it.”
As of Jan. 10, the shelter’s website listed the “sweet” dog among its pups in need of new homes. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at cchsshelter.com.
The Carteret County Humane Society is in Newport, near popular beach destinations and a roughly 140-mile drive southeast from Raleigh.
