Heartbroken owner gives up dogs after Helene hit North Carolina. Two still need homes
A heartbroken owner gave up her dogs after Hurricane Helene slammed North Carolina.
While Bella the dog is settling into a new home, the woman’s two other pups are still waiting to be adopted, the Humane Society of Catawba County wrote on its website.
“(Dee Dee), BG, and Bella’s mom recently faced a tough decision after being displaced by Hurricane Helene and navigating hotel life,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post. “Her circumstances shifted, and she made the heartbreaking choice to find loving homes for her beloved pets so she could focus on finding stability for herself. We promised her we’d do just that — find them the loving homes they deserve.”
The dogs landed at the shelter Jan. 10, almost four months after Helene made landfall in late September. The deadly storm ravaged parts of Western North Carolina with strong winds and catastrophic flooding.
As of Jan. 27, Dee Dee and BG remained up for adoption. The two dogs are “sweet” Chihuahua mixes who would do well in calm, kid-free homes, the shelter wrote on social media and in an email to McClatchy News.
Dee Dee is described as a 6-year-old pup who “needs a gentle, patient hand to help her feel secure. Once she trusts you, she’ll show her affectionate and snuggly lap dog side.”
Meanwhile, 9-year-old “BG is the shyest of the bunch and still adjusting to life outside the warm comfort of his mom’s arms. He needs a patient adopter who can provide him with the calm, quiet home he craves,” the humane society wrote.
The shelter is in the Hickory area, a roughly 50-mile drive northwest from Charlotte. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at catawbahumane.org.
“If you or someone you know is looking for a loyal companion, please reach out to us,” the shelter wrote. “Let’s make sure their next chapter is their happiest yet!”
