Surrendered dog was ‘terrified of the world around her.’ She waits for new home in NC

A rescue dog “struggles to let her fears go” — and she needs a patient new owner.

“Meet Paige, a shy and gentle soul on a journey to rediscover the love and safety she deserves,” a North Carolina animal rescue wrote Jan. 29 on Facebook. “Paige’s story began when she and her furry friend were surrendered to a shelter because their previous owners didn’t have time for them. This abrupt change left Paige terrified of the world around her, making even the smallest noises send her running for cover.”

Paige, who eventually landed at the Triangle Beagle Rescue, now waits for her “perfect home.” She is in foster care, where she has been gaining trust since May.

“It took time, but she’s now brave enough to use the doggie door and even comes inside when called — a big step for this timid girl,” the Raleigh-area rescue wrote. “Although still wary of new people, especially men, Paige is starting to show signs of comfort.”

Paige is described as a “special” 4-year-old dog who’s affectionate toward her foster mom. Despite the progress she’s made, she still gets tense when she’s picked up.

“Even though she is scared she has never been defensive,” foster mom Sheila Cole told McClatchy News via email. “She retreats whenever she gets nervous. She doesn’t walk on a leash well because of her fear. She has eyes that are soulful like you can see through her.”

As of Jan. 31, Paige was still listed as available for adoption on the rescue’s website. Details about the animal organization’s adoption process can be found at tribeagles.org.

“Paige might not be into toys or playtime with other dogs, but she’s perfectly content sniffing around and observing from a safe distance,” rescuers wrote. “Her foster mom knows it will take time, but she’s determined to show Paige that not all humans will let her down.”
