‘Sweet’ mama dog’s nine puppies were all adopted. Now she still waits for home in NC
A “sweet” mama dog’s nine puppies all got homes — but she still waits for a second chance in North Carolina.
“Chrissy poured her heart into raising her babies, and now that they are healthy and grown, she’s ready to start her next chapter,” the Humane Society of Union County wrote Jan. 22 on Facebook. “Chrissy is full of life and would love a home where she can run and play in a fenced yard. Bonus points if you have another furry friend to join her in all the fun!”
Chrissy waits for a new owner after she was rescued from South Carolina in August. She had been at the Darlington County Humane Society as the shelter braced for Hurricane Debby, according to social media posts and details shared with McClatchy News via email.
Chrissy, who was pregnant at the time, made it to safety. Within about 24 hours of arriving at the Humane Society of Union County, she gave birth to five boys and four girls, all of which have since been adopted.
“She was a great mom to her puppies,” Laura Sur, executive director of the animal organization, told McClatchy News in a phone interview. “She likes to be the center of attention and likes to have her people around.”
Chrissy is a 2-year-old mixed-breed dog who loves showing off her energetic side outdoors but sometimes gets scared when cars drive nearby. She also lets out “ferocious” barks when people pass her foster home, which is a behavior she’s working to improve, according to the email and an online adoption profile.
The humane society said Chrissy has spent time with older adults and believes she could do well as a therapy dog.
“Once the initial excitement wears down, she snuggles with them,” her foster mom told the humane society. “The comfort is mutual. She is too strong to help walk her, BUT she motivates them to walk with her, and this helps them immensely.”
The animal organization, which said pups often get adopted faster than their moms, still listed Chrissy among the dogs available for adoption as of Jan. 27. Details about the humane society’s adoption process can be found at hsuc.org.
The foster-based organization has a presence in Monroe, a roughly 25-mile drive southeast from uptown Charlotte.
