After a bitter winter storm, southwestern Illinois and St. Louis area residents can expect a warmer, possibly rainy New Year’s weekend.

The National Weather Service St. Louis office forecasts warmer temperatures for the last week of December heading into January, along with some possible precipitation.

Forecasters wrote in a Dec. 26 tweet multiple rounds of rain may hit the area from late Thursday to Saturday.

Here are New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day weather predictions for the St. Louis metro from the NWS and Accuweather, plus a regional prediction from the Farmers’ Almanac.

What will New Year’s weather look like near St. Louis?

The NWS forecasts scattered showers Dec. 31, with mostly cloudy skies and a high around 51 degrees Fahrenheit. The chance of precipitation on New Year’s Eve is 50% as of Dec. 27.

Saturday night will bring a 30% chance of showers before midnight, the NWS forecasts, and the evening’s low will hover around 41 degrees. New Year’s Day may be mostly cloudy with a high of 51 and a low of 41, according to NWS.

Accuweather predicts a rainy New Year’s Eve in St. Louis, with a 65% chance of precipitation and temperatures between 43 and 49 degrees. The weather site forecasts a “mostly cloudy and mild” Jan. 1, with temperatures from 42 to 53 degrees and a 10% likelihood of precipitation.

Farmers’ Almanac predictions for New Year’s

The Farmers’ Almanac has released New Year’s Eve weather predictions for U.S. and Canada localities. Illinois is in the almanac’s “Zone 2,” along with Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

Zone 2 residents can expect “variable cloudiness, few rain or snow showers as we ring in ’23,” according to the almanac.

Missouri is in Zone 4 with Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. The almanac’s Zone 4 prediction reads: “Mostly fair as year comes to an end.”

The almanac makes predictions based on a mysterious formula that considers factors such as planetary positioning, sunspot activity and tidal action of the moon.

“The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee,” the organization’s website says. “To protect this proprietary formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.”
