Heavy rainfall on the way. Flood watch remains in effect for metro-east

Look for multiple rounds of rain this weekend.

The metro-east can expect 2 to 6 inches of rain from Thursday to Saturday and the region is under a flood watch until 1 a.m. Sunday.

A few severe storms with large hail are possible on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The agency’s forecast also said creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

“For the metro-east, there could be some flooding, there could be some flash flooding,” said Mark Fuchs, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

The heavier rain is expected to be in Monroe County, where the total could be 6 inches, Fuchs said.

In St. Clair and Madison counties, there is about a 25% chance to get 5 inches or more inches of rain, according to a National Weather Service forecast.

Since this amount of rain is spread over multiple days, the flooding is not expected to compare to the flooding that occurred on July 16 when 8 inches of rain fell in St. Clair County and widespread damage was reported.

However, Fuchs advised metro-east residents to stay alert for flooding.

“You need to be careful and treat it with appropriate respect,” Fuchs said of potential flooding this weekend.
