The snowfall predicted for Monday arrived earlier than expected and crashes have been reported on highways across the region as of Monday afternoon.

An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow will fall on Monday night, according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

“Anybody on the roads early this evening need to aware that there’s more coming,” said Mark Fuchs, who is a hydrologist with the National Weather Service

Herb Simmons, director of the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency, said the Monday night snowfall is likely to occur between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Simmons urged motorists to give snowplow drivers plenty of room if they are on the roads Monday night.

“If people don’t need to be out, just take a night off,” Simmons said.

As of mid-afternoon, there had been 33 crashes reported in St. Clair County, Simmons said.

Crash sites included Interstate 64, Interstate 255, Illinois 15 and Frank Scott Parkway. In the Illinois 15 crash, westbound traffic was being diverted onto South 74th Street, according the emergency management agency.

Fuchs said the snow began falling in the metro area about three hours earlier than expected.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until midnight Monday.

The Monday storm arrived on the heels of a storm on Saturday that left 5 inches of snow in Belleville.
