Poll results: Belleville East junior BND Baseball Player of the Week in southwestern IL
Dawson Vernier of Belleville East High School is the winner of this week’s Belleville News-Democrat Baseball Player of the Week high school poll, as selected by readers of bnd.com.
In two recent outings against Althoff and Triad, Vernier, a junior pitcher, allowed just 4 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) in 8 1/3 innings while walking just 2 and fanning 2.
Vernier, who secured 79% of the votes, entered the weekend with a 2-2 record and 1.04 earned run average while allowing just 17 hits and 5 walks to go with 27 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings pitched for the Lancers, stationed at 20-13 overall and 6-4 in the Southwestern Conference.
Here were the other candidates for the week of May 8-13:
- David Barker, O’Fallon High School, junior, RHP. Barker notched 11 strikeouts in a 4-3 loss against Collinsville as the Panthers entered the week at 21-6 overall and 7-3 in the Southwestern Conference.
- Tyler Ballor, Mascoutah High School, senior, P. Ballor hit a HR and had 3 RBI in a 9-3 win against Waterloo. The Indians entered the week at 23-6-1 overall and finished 6-3 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
- Brody Landgraf, Columbia High School, freshman, INF. Landgraf hit a HR and had 3 RBI in a 8-5 win against Edwardsville as the Eagles entered the week at 28-3 overall. Columbia also captured the Cahokia Conference (Mississippi Division) with a 9-1 mark.
- Jackson Rodgers, Father McGivney High School, senior, INF. Rodgers posted 6 strikeouts in a 13-0 win against Civic Memorial. He then had 3 hits in a 12-3 win over Litchfield. The Griffins entered the week at 34-1 overall and won the Gateway Metro Conference with a 10-0 mark.
- TJ Suter, Triad High School, senior, P. Suter registered 6 strikeouts in a 3-2 win over Belleville East. The Knights entered the week at 21-10 overall and 9-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference to capture the league title.
