Poll results: Gibault Catholic senior BND Baseball Player of the Week in southwest IL
Daniel Darin of Gibault Catholic High School is the winner of this week’s Belleville News-Democrat Baseball Player of the Week high school poll, as selected by readers of bnd.com.
In recent action, Darin, a senior, outfielder, first baseman and pitcher, hit a HR and had 4 RBI in an 11-1 victory against Marissa in the IHSA Class 1A Valmeyer Regional championship game.
Darin, who secured 50% of the votes, entered Saturday’s sectional championship game against Christ Our Rock Lutheran batting .414 with 5 home runs and 27 RBI for the 20-14 Hawks. Darin also was unscored upon in 10 innings this season heading into action Saturday.
Here were the other candidates for the week of May 15-20:
- Lucas Huebner, Edwardsville High School, junior, C. Huebner had 2 hits and 3 RBI in a 6-1 win against Triad as the Tigers entered the week at 26-9.
- Dylan Mannino, Belleville East High School, senior, P. Mannino notched 7 strikeouts in a 10-0 victory over Collinsville, helping the Lancers enter the week at 20-13.
- Gabe Smith, Father McGivney High School, senior, INF/P. Smith had 2 hits in a 13-2 win against Wood River in regional action. He then notched 11 strikeouts in 6 innings while earning the victory in a 8-0 decision over Roxana in the IHSA Class 2A Roxana Regional championship game for the Griffins, who entered sectional action this week at 36-1.
- Nick Widel, Freeburg High School, junior, P. Wedel threw 7 strikeouts while tossing 5 2/3 shutout innings in a 8-0 victory over Sparta in the IHSA Class 2A Sparta Regional semifinals. The Midgets finished the season at 22-14.
