East St. Louis track team captures state championship at Eastern Illinois University

The East St. Louis Flyers track and field team earned the IHSA Class 2A state championship title Saturday, May 27, at Eastern Illinois University.

Here are individual results involving the Flyers:

• Demarlynn Taylor: State champion is 300 hurdles; third in 110 meter hurdles
• Kenneth Buchanan: Eighth in 100 meter dash, fourth in 200 meter dash
• Devion Montgomery: State champion in 400 meter dash, fifth in 200 meter dash
• Quentin Stepney: Eighth in 400 meter dash
• Denium Powell: Ninth in high jump
• Tyreque Baker: Eighth in triple jump
• Andrew Bownes: Eighth in discus
• 4x100 relay (second place) Demarlynn Taylor, Malachi Wren, Kenneth Buchanan and Devion Montgomery
• 4x200 relay (third place): Kenneth Buchanan, Malachi Wren, Ralph Smith and Timothy Cross
• 4x400 relay (state champions): Quentin Stepney, Demarlynn Taylor, Darris Ivy and Devion Montgomery

The Flyers’ head coach is Barry Malloyd.

East St. Louis UNIFIED track and field team

In addition to the boys track and field team, the East St. Louis Flyers UNIFIED track and field team earned the IHSA Class 2A state championship title Thursday, May 25.

Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. East St. Louis Senior High School is proud to be an inclusive school campus. This year, the unified sports teams included:

• Flag football: State champions, IHSA Unified
• Bowling
• Dance
• Basketball: Second place, IHSA Class 2A Unified
• Track and field: State champions, IHSA Class 2A Unified

Here are the results involving the Flyers’ girls team at state:

• Janiyah Brown: Sixth long jump and eighth triple jump
• 4x100 relay (seventh place): KaMiya McClain, Sydney Jones, Bailiy Graham and Armonie Glenn
• 4x200 relay (fourth place): Sydney Jones, Armonie Glenn, Bailiy Graham and Ambrasha Lampley
• 4x400 relay (sixth place): Zhakeya Hawkins, Bailiy Graham, Armonie Glenn and Kamillah Tugle
