Edwardsville pair earn honorable mention status on AP girls class 4A all-state team
Southwestern Conference scoring champion Sydney Harris of Edwardsville headlines a list of five metro east players who earned honorable mention status on the Associated Press Girls Class 3A-4A All-State Basketball Teams.
Harris — the niece of former Southern Illinois University at Edwardsvillle men’s basketball coach Jon Harris — averaged 15.7 points and 4.8 rebounds in her sophomore season as she helped lead the Tigers to the SWC title. Ranked among the top four schools in the Class 4A state poll all season, Edwardsville finished 27-2 before losing to league rival O’Fallon in the IHSA sectional.
Joining Harris as Class 4A honorable mention selections are Tigers teammate Quierra Love and O’Fallon senior guard Kayla Gordon..
Love, a major contributor in coach Lori Blade’s program since her freshman season, averaged 11.4 points, 3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and nearly three steals. Gordon, a 5-5 point guard was a key for O’Fallon’s tam which finished 28-6 and advanced to the title game of the Pekin Sectional where it lost to Lincoln-Way West
Gordon averaged 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.5 assisnts and 2.3 steals per game.
Highland junior Bella LaPorta and Civic Memorial senior Anna Hall earned Class 3A honorable mention recognition.
LaPorta, a 6-1 junior forward, averaged 12..3 points and 9.4 rebounds for a Bulldogs squad which finished 27-8 and reached the Springfield Super-Sectional where it lost to Springfield Lanphier.
Hall, the News-Democrat Class 3A-4A player of the year last season, averaged 16.5 points and 6.7 rebounds for an Eagles team which finished 29-6.
