East St. Louis quarterback Tyler Macon picks up scholarship offer from MAC school
The NCAA Division I college football scholarship offers are continuing to mount for East St. Louis junior quarterback Tyler Macon.
Less than three weeks after leading the Flyers to the Class 6A state title, Macon picked up his eighth scholarship offer, this one from Kent State University.
The 6-foot 180-pound Macon, is ranked as the No. 21-ranked dual position player in the state by 247 Sports. He announced the Kent State offer on his twitter account last week.
Kent State (6-6) which will play Utah State in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl, is the third Mid-American Conference school to offer Macon a scholarship. Western Michigan and Central Michigan extended offers previously.
A first team Class 6A all-state selection by the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association, Macon also has scholarship offers from Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Iowa St and Southern Mississippi.
A two-year starter for coach Darren Sunkett’s Flyers, Macon led East St. Louis to a 14-0 record and its ninth state championship this season. The Flyers defeated Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge 43-21 in the state title game at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
Macon’s numbers are impressive in his two years in leading the Flyers.
This past season, Macon completed 219-of-314 for 4,241 yards and 39 touchdowns. He also ran for 827 yards and 17 touchdowns. For his career, Macon has thrown for more than 6,500 yards with 67 touchdown passes and only 13 interceptions. He has also run for more than 2,000 yards and 35 touchdowns.
Macon is not the only local quarterback to be recruited by a MAC school. Granite City senior Freddy Edwards has signed with Miami, Ohio University.
