St. Louis Cardinals plan to be active at Winter Meetings but feel the starters are already on the team
During last week’s introductory news conference for Paul Goldschmidt, John Mozeliak said the team was still looking at adding help in the bullpen.
The Cardinals are rumored to be pushing the Giants for left-handed relievers Will Smith, according to The Athletic’s Mark Saxon, and Tony Watson, according to the Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold.
According to Goold, the Cardinals would consider trading Jose Martinez for one of the pitchers.
Martinez, whose defense has made it difficult for St. Louis to find a place for him in the lineup, is expendable now that the Cardinals can rely on Paul Goldschmidt to play first base.
The rumors are coming out of the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas, which end Thursday.
Cardinals sticking with Dexter Fowler
According to MLB.com’s Jennifer Langosch, the Cardinals plan to open the season with Dexter Fowler in right field.
But Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that Fowler still sees himself as an every day player.
“I want him to chase that carrot. I want him to be someone who shows up to camp who wants that everyday role.”
The decision was not popular with Cardinals fans on Twitter.
