With more than 30 offers, East St. Louis lineman announces his college commitment
Miles McVay, East St. Louis’ highly recruited offensive lineman, announced his commitment to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide during a party at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club of St. Louis Thursday.
“I would like to THANK All the Universities and coaches that recruited me. It was a tough decision, because I became so close with some Great Great coaches. Good luck and keep doing it Big @Football_Flyers #FamousCommits #RollTide,” McVay posted on Twitter Friday morning.
McVay, of East St. Louis, is a 4-star recruit, according to multiple college talent evaluators.
At 6-feet 7 inches and 330 pounds, he will be bringing a ton of size to the Crimson Tide’s offensive line.
24/7 Sports’ National Recruiting Analysis, Allen Trieu, says McVay “plays with a sturdy base and has the natural power and strength to where he is tough to bull-rush, but he is also skilled enough as a pass protector to handle speed rushers.”
Trieu added that McVay needs some work on his lateral movement and managing his weight.
McVay said he picked Alabama for the tradition Coach Nick Saban has built in Tuscaloosa.
“I mean, Coach Saban’s culture is almost unbeatable. You see what he’s done over the years. Alabama is Alabama, if that makes sense. It’s the standard,” McVay told BamaOnLine.
McVay joined wide receiver Luther Burden III (Class of 2022) as the Flyers’ second straight top recruit in Illinois.
Burden was ranked as the No. 1 recruit in Illinois by Rivals and ESPN before he went on to join the Missouri Tigers to pursue his collegiate career.
Rivals lists McVay as the best recruit in Illinois and as the 9th best offensive tackle in the nation. ESPN ranked McVay as the second best recruit in Illinois and 15 at his position. 24/7 sports also gave McVay the nod for the second best recruit in Illinois, but slotted him at 19th at offensive tackles.
McVay had 33 college offers, including those from major schools like Michigan State, Oregon, Missouri, Texas A&M and Jackson State, according to Rivals. Alabama began its bid to recruit him in the summer of 2021.
During the 2021-2022 season, the Flyers (11-3) were one point short from bringing home a state title to East St. Louis. McVay will be entering his senior year where East St. Louis will be competing again for a state football championship in Illinois.
Alabama head coach, Nick Saban, will be adding his 19th recruit for the class of 2023 which surrpassed Norte Dame with McVay’s decision as the best recruiting class in the nation, according to 24/7 Sports.
McVay used his platform Thursday to advocate for students in East St. Louis by asking for donations of school supplies.
