Fire strikes East St. Louis apartment building

East St. Louis firefighters fought an apartment blaze in the 500 block of Gray Boulevard on Saturday morning.

The building was occupied and had eight apartments, according to the Belleville Fire Department. Though residents escaped safely, one East St. Louis firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.

At 9:30 a.m., East St. Louis requested a ladder truck from Fairmont City.

Calls to the East St. Louis Fire Department were not immediately returned.
