Firefighters battled a house fire just after 6:30 a.m. Friday in East St. Louis.
Initially the flames were called in as a grass fire, according to Midway Assistant Chief Arthur Villhard. Then, as crews were heading toward the fire, witnesses reported an explosion.
Villhard said there was no initial indication on what caused the fire, which heavily damaged a house behind heavy foliage in the area of North 83rd and Bluff streets. The state fire marshal will investigate to determine how the fire started.
Camp Jackson, French Village, Alorton and State Park fire departments assisted in battling the blaze.
