Bicyclist killed by teen driving while on her phone, police say
A Venedy man was struck and killed by a car as he biked on the shoulder of Illinois 15, officials say.
David P. Weber, 63, was riding his bike just after 6 p.m. Thursday when he was struck by a pickup driven by a juvenile girl, according to a news release. The girl’s identity has not been released. Weber was taken to Washington County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Weber was riding his bike just east of Illinois 153 when he was hit. He appears to have died from internal bleeding from blunt-force trauma, the release said.
The driver was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper passing of a bicycle and illegal cell phone usage, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
