Police had no suspects or persons of interest as of Tuesday in the death of a 28-year-old man who was gunned down in a backyard in East St. Louis.

The man was identified as Quiantez Fair, 28. The coroner did not have a precise address for him as of Tuesday.

East St. Louis police were called to the 700 block of N. 84th Street at 2:45 p.m. Monday for a report of a man down, and they found the body of a man in the back of the residence, said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Mark Doiron. Illinois State Police were working to locate witnesses that may lead them to what happened.

Witnesses have been unwilling to come forward with leads, which makes the death difficult to investigate, Doiron said.

“When no one wants to come forward and help, it only gets worse from that point forward,” he said.

Fair did not live on North 84th Street, but was visiting for an unknown reason, Doiron said. Police were still trying to piece together why.

Earlier reports of police finding a suspect’s car at a Cahokia residence were false, Doiron said. The owner and passenger in the vehicle did not have anything to do with Fair’s death.
