Carjacking at Belleville Walmart ends in crash in East St. Louis
Two men carjacked a woman in Belleville’s Walmart parking lot, drove off with her car and crashed in East St. Louis after a police chase Saturday, police say.
At around 6:40 p.m., a young black man wearing a blue sweatshirt approached a woman as she was getting into her silver 2007 silver Honda Civic, according to a press release from Belleville police.
He was carrying a black handgun and told her to give him her keys, police say. She did so and the man got into the driver’s seat. Another black male got into the passenger seat before they drove off.
The stolen vehicle was seen going east on Route 15 by an officer and he attempted to stop the car, police say. The man did not stop the car and fled from officers, leading them on a pursuit.
At 18th Street and Missouri Avenue in East St. Louis, the men crashed the car. The two were taken into custody and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police say.
A BB gun was found at the scene of the crash.
The two men, a 16-year-old and 17-years-old, were being held at the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center as of Sunday afternoon.
Illinois State Police also assisted in the incident.
