East St. Louis school board president’s son shot dead during altercation

Kerwin Williams, the son of East St. Louis School District 189 Board President Kinnis Williams, was fatally shot Monday in an altercation on Cleveland Avenue.

Illinois State Police Special Agent Elbert Jennings on Saturday said 35-year-old Kerwin Williams’ death was the subject of “an ongoing investigation.” He said he could not discuss details.

Kinnis Williams could not be reached for comment.

Kerwin Williams was reportedly taken to a hospital in St. Louis and pronounced dead from multiple gunshots. According to a news report, two guns were involved in the shooting, and Williams was still alive when he was transported to St. Louis.

St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said city police and investigators from the Illinois State Police were investigating, and he expected to receive their report soon to determine if charges could be filed.
