Three people are dead after two house fires broke out early Wednesday morning in Harrisburg, a small town near the Shawnee National Forest in Saline County.
A Harrisburg Fire Department official said the department was at the first fire “for just a little while” when they were then called to the second fire.
An early-morning fire on Pacific Street in Harrisburg killed two occupants, according to The Southern Illinoisan. A third person was in the two-story, single-family home at the time of the fire; that person’s condition was not released.
The fire department said the fire was under investigation.

Another fire on Shaw Street is also under investigation, according to KFVS-TV 12. The station reported an additional person had died as result of the fires, but did not report which fire the person died in.
WSIL-TV reported two people made out of the home on Shaw Street safely.
Fire departments from outside Harrisburg were called to assist because the fires on Shaw and Pacific were at about the same time. The Harrisburg Fire Department has eight full-time firefighters and has pay-per-call volunteers, the department said.
Harrisburg has a population of just around 9,000.
