One death blamed on severe storms in metro-east; 54,000 without power at peak of outage

A Belleville man was pronounced dead Wednesday after emergency crews found him in contact with a live power line in an alley behind his home on South 18th Street.

According to Belleville Fire Chief Tom Pour, fire crews responded to the area at 5:15 p.m. for a report of smoke showing from a back yard. Pour said the man, who firefighters believe was in his 30s, was attempting to remove downed tree limbs that had fallen onto his rear garage.

The tree limbs brought down with them a live line that the man may not have known was there.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
