UPDATE: Teen on bicycle struck by vehicle on Illinois 15, taken to hospital
Belleville Police say a 15-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after getting hit by a pickup truck on Illinois 15 in Belleville late Wednesday night.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene at Illinois 15 at Turkey Hill Lane before 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Master Sgt. Mark Heffernan said in a news release that the teenager was taken to a Belleville hospital and then airlifted to a St. Louis hospital with “serious injuries.”
The truck driver was not injured as a result of the crash, police said. The driver was in a 2012 Dodge Ram.
Police said the teenage boy crossed lanes of traffic to get across Illinois 15 on the bicycle. The boy was traveling southbound, according to the news release. The pickup truck was heading eastbound on Illinois 15 when the crash occurred. Heffernan said the Dodge Ram was unable to avoid hitting the bicyclist.
Police said the driver of the Dodge Ram remained on scene where he was interviewed by officers of the Belleville Police Traffic Unit. No signs of impairment were observed, police said.
Heffernan said no arrests or citations were issued, and that the investigation was ongoing.
