Will Fairview Heights Macy’s survive companywide store closures?
Macy’s plans to close about 100 of its 728 stores — many by early next year. But the company has not made a final decision on which locations will be shuttered.
The retailer is currently in the process of analyzing “the situation of each store,” according to Andrea Schwartz, vice president of media relations and cause marketing for Macy’s north central region.
Schwartz said Thursday most of the 100 locations would be announced closer to the end of the company’s 2016 fiscal year.
There are currently 29 Macy’s locations in Illinois, including one inside the St. Clair Square mall in Fairview Heights and another in the Alton Square Mall. There are also 11 locations in Missouri.
Workers who are displaced by the closings might be offered positions in nearby stores, Macy’s stated in a news release.
In addition to the closures, Macy’s plans include reallocating investments to “highest-growth-potential store and digital businesses,” according to the release.
