Mom leaves stove unattended; family of 9 loses mobile home in fire
A mother and her eight children were displaced early Monday after a fire swept through their double-wide mobile home in the 4800 block of Washington Park Boulevard.
Washington Park Fire Chief Charles Schreiber said a call reporting the fire came in at 2:40 a.m. He said the fire, which gutted the four bedroom mobile home, was caused by a stove that was left unattended while it was being used.
“The children’s mother was cooking and left the stove unattended. The stove caught on fire and the fire quickly spread throughout the double-wide mobile home, destroying all of the contents inside,” Schreiber said.
No one was injured. The mother and her eight children got out safely and no firefighters were hurt.
The fire was under control within 30 minutes, but Washington Park firefighters, along with a State Park Place fire crew that assisted, remained on scene for about three hours. An Illinois state fire marshal is investigating. Red Cross volunteers are assisting the family with their needs.
