Police ID man fatally shot while driving in East St. Louis

Police on Tuesday were investigating the death 23-year-old Quincy Ware, who was shot while driving through East St. Louis.

Ware’s car, a red Toyota Camry, came to rest on a utility pole at the corner of 29th Street and Ridge Avenue.

East St. Louis Police began receiving calls about 1:49 p.m. from multiple people who stated they heard gunshots, according to Capt. Bobby Cole. An officer arrived on the scene about 1:53 p.m.

“As he was approaching the area, multiple gunshots were heard by the officer and the residents, and calls were still coming in to the police department,” Cole said Tuesday.

When additional police officers arrived, “they found a black male inside a vehicle. It had hit a pole and the victim was expired,” Cole said.

Ware’s last known address was in East St. Louis.

About 10 bullets were visible on the ground at the scene, which had been marked by police. A large crowd was gathered around the area Tuesday as police worked.

Illinois State Police and East St. Louis Police were handling the investigation. They canvassed the neighborhood Tuesday.
