Metro-East Lutheran looks for respectability
The Metro-East Lutheran Knights finished the 2015 season with an 0-9 record, were shut out three times and gave up 30 or more points in seven of nine games. But in the eyes of coach Matt Tschudy, the season did have its good points.
Getting a boost in its talent level in its first co-op season with athletes from Madison High School, Metro-East Lutheran had both increased numbers and interest in its program. With a squad featuring many sophomores and juniors who played key roles on a Knights junior-varsity team which finished 3-1, Tschudy is hopeful of a .500 or better ‘16 season.
“We didn’t have a lot of success at the varsity level but we played a lot of freshmen and sophomores who are coming back with a year of experience under their belts. At the high school level, that’s huge,’’ Tschudy said. “Some of these kids came out for football for the first year. Now, they know what to expect and what its about.’’
Tschudy said that 35 players — including 20 who are bused in for practice each day from Madison — will make up the Knights roster.
“I was very impressed at how the kids from both schools bonded last year. That was great to see,’’ Taschudy said. “There we no issues at all. I sense a lot of excitement in our football program right now.
“We were 0-9 last year but I think the fact that the kids we have coming back know that they will be a year older, a year stronger and with more experience. I think we’ve got a chance to be a good football team.’’
Offense
With 35 players in the program, Metro-East won’t have nearly as many two-way starters this season. This will be a bonus to the offense which will rely heavily on the running and throwing ability of senior quarterback Vince Wilson.
The 6-foot, 165-pound Wilson has a strong arm and also has the speed and versatility to both allude oncoming linemen and outrun linebackers and defensive backs. Junior Fa’Shawn Merrit is one of several running backs who will get playing time for the Knights while the offensive line is led by small, but quick players such as Kai Luckert and Kinden Griggs.
Jvyuan Wilson who gained 50 yards on 26 carries in spot duty a year ago will also be a running back while junior Caleb Jones will be at wide receiver.
“We have a lot more options on the offensive side of the football,’’ Tschudy said. “I really like what I see from Vince (Wilson). He’s a smart kid with good athletic ability. He has good speed and a very strong throwing arm.’’
Defense
Better depth should really benefit a Knights defense which wore wore down late in several games last season. Linebacker Kyle Johnson will anchor the defense while in cornerback Cortez Cook, the Knights have one of the top small school defensive backs in the area.
As for the season, Tschudy has high hopes.
“I think we’ve got a good chance to have a winning season,’’ Tschudy said. “I know that because of our record during the past couple of years that people will probably underestimate us, but I really like this group. I see a lot of positive changes in this football program.”
