Who got BND Game Balls for Week 1? Who’s on top of the football rankings?

Here are the weekly Belleville News-Democrat Game Balls given to area football players for some top performances in Week 1: 

  • Cahokia quarterback Wayne Grant threw for 270 yards and four touchdowns, including an 11-yard TD pass to Kenyon Sanders with 14.4 seconds remaining in a come-from-behind 25-24 win over Highland.
  • East St. Louis All-American senior receiver Jeff Thomas caught five passes for 171 yards and two TDs in the Flyers’ impressive 34-3 road victory over state-ranked Providence Catholic.
  • Althoff senior quarterback Trey Mosley tossed five TD passes in the first half of the Crusaders’ 58-15 victory over Collinsville. Mosley completed 10-of-15 passes for 161 yards and five TDs, all in the first half. Althoff senior receiver and St. Louis University basketball recruit Jordan Goodwin caught four passes for 95 yards and two TDs.
  • Columbia quarterback Greg Long threw two TD passes, ran for two TDs and also kicked a 37-yard field goal in the Eagles’ 37-21 road victory over Morton. Long completed 19-of-24 passes for 219 yards, but his contributions didn’t just stop on offense. He had an interception, a sack and six tackles on defense.
  • Central quarterback Hunter Toeben helped account for two late TDs as the Cougars came from behind to beat Mascoutah 33-27. Toeben scored on a 21-yard run with 2:47 remaining, then ran for the 2-point conversion to tie the game. He also tossed an 11-yard TD pass to Ben Rakers with 10 seconds remaining to clinch the win.
  • Nashville senior quarterback Andrew Kash passed for 256 yards and one TD and also ran for two TDs as the Hornets overcame a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter and beat Carlyle 45-42.
  • Belleville West running back Kriston Davis ran for 194 yards and three TDs on 16 carries in the Maroons’ 34-24 home loss to Batavia.
  • Carlyle running back Donte Nettles ran for 203 yards and two TDs on 23 carries in the Indians’ loss to Nashville. Indians quarterback Alex Huels completed 22-of-36 passes for 221 yards and three TDs.
  • Edwardsville senior A.J. Epenesa blocked a field goal attempt, blocked an extra-point attempt and scored on a 2-yard TD run as the Tigers handed Quincy its first regular-season home defeat since 2012. Epenesa has verbally committed to Iowa.
  • Highland junior quarterback Garrett Marti threw for 258 yards and two TDs in the Bulldogs’ 25-24 loss to Cahokia, also adding another 97 yards and two TDs rushing. Highland sophomore receiver Sam LaPorta caught seven passes for 126 yards and one TD.
