East Belleville restaurant closes its doors permanently. Here’s what we know

An area A&W Restaurant permanently closed its doors this week.

The restaurant, located at 648 Carlyle Ave. in Belleville, closed Tuesday, said owner Jim Sill.

He said in a phone interview Friday that while the opening in October 2022 went well, business at that location didn’t take off the way he hoped it would and “never met our expectations.”

The store significantly underperformed compared with other restaurants in the area, Sill said. Unable to keep up with rising costs on top of declining sales, he and his business partner decided to close.

The property that previously housed a Scott Credit Union is currently listed for sale.

This closing follows the shuttering of a Burger King restaurant at 2508 Green Mount Commons Drive in August.

Other chain restaurants – Wendy’s and Denny’s – announced in recent weeks that they would close multiple locations nationwide by the end of the year. It is not yet known if area locations are among those that will close.
