Another Mexican restaurant closes in Belleville. Here’s why
Another Belleville eatery closed this week, this time on the city’s west end.
Margaritas Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, located at 4817 W. Main St. and better known as Margaritas West, announced via social media Monday that the location is now closed.
“Dear beloved customers, unfortunately we must close down our restaurant on West Main Street. This will also be our last post as well. We are sorry for delivering this sad news at such short notice, since we too were notified on short notice,” stated the post on the Margaritas West Facebook page.
The post continued by thanking customers for their years of support as well as for their “wonderful comments, … support, kindness, memories and love.”
A call to the West Main Street number went unanswered, but owner Javier Gutierrez was reached at the downtown location.
He said that he sold the business to another Mexican restaurant but did not share the name of the new owner.
He said it’s harder to retain employees and to keep two businesses operating, which is why the new owner decided to put all efforts into the one location.
Some of the employees from the west location will move downtown, Gutierrez said.
Margaritas West opened in fall 2015 in a building that once housed a Pizza Hut.
News of the West Main Street restaurant’s closing comes the week after Mariachi’s closed its doors at 400 S. Illinois St. in Belleville following nearly 22 years in business.
Margaritas Mexican Restaurant & Cantina remains open at 108 E. A St. in Belleville.
