Previously shuttered sandwich shop set to return to Fairview Heights
Firehouse Subs will soon return to Fairview Heights.
Franchisees Chris and Evelyn Steinacher are remodeling the shop at 5909 N. Illinois St. Evelyn Steinacher said Tuesday they hope to open by the end of summer.
Firehouse Subs will reopen at its former location, where it previously operated under franchisee Rod Wanjala. The shop closed suddenly in summer 2024.
In May 2024, Wanjala emailed the city’s finance team and said he planned to sell the location to the Steinachers, who were pursuing the site. By July, Chris Steinacher said he had not heard from Wanjala for a couple of weeks, and a deal to take ownership was never finalized.
Last May, Dallas Alley, director of land use and economic development, said all equipment and storefront signage had been removed, and the space was listed for lease.
Alley told the BND in early April that the Steinachers had leased the space to bring Firehouse Subs back to Fairview Heights. The city was expecting build-out plans for permits, and no opening date was available.
In addition to the coming Fairview Heights sandwich shop, the Steinachers have Firehouse Subs locations in Collinsville and Edwardsville and the Atomic Wings location in Fairview Heights.
