Cupio’s Barbecue in Belleville is closed following an electrical fire that occurred late Sunday.

The fire was limited to the building’s electrical panel, owner Michael Green said. No one was at the restaurant at the time, he said.

Cupio’s is located at 4320 W. Main St. in Bellevile at the former Steak n’ Shake site. The restaurant opened in February. For Green, the restaurant is retirement business, meant to keep him busy.

The business’s future is unknown. Green said the entire building needs to be rewired, but when asked about his plans moving forward, he replied, “I’m going fishing.”

The area around the building’s electrical source was clear of boxes and other items, which helped keep the fire from spreading quickly, Green said.

Belleville Deputy Fire Chief Jesse Garnica said Wednesday the fire occurred at 11 p.m. Sunday but could not provide additional information.
