A new restaurant is closer to opening its doors on Belleville’s West Main Street as Cupio’s prepares to offer a menu of barbecue, burgers and brunch.

Located in the former Steak n’ Shake at 4320 W. Main, Cupio’s is slated to open by the end of the month, pending final inspections, said manager Laila Toms.

Toms said the restaurant is a rebranding of Tootie’s on Washington Avenue in St. Louis, which Cupio’s owners Michael and Bernadette Green (no relation) co-owned with Dominique Coburn, also known as Tootie.

Tootie’s closed in August 2024, according to the business’ Facebook page.

The concept for Cupio’s was developed around late June, Toms said. Work on the building’s interior began in August.

Although a new sign was recently installed, the building’s exterior still resembles the old Steak ’n Shake but will undergo some cosmetic changes. It’s the inside that looks completely different, said Toms, with its red, black and orange color palette.

Cupio’s will offer “a chill vibe,” she said, describing the place as “a little homey.”

In addition to food and a bar, there will be video gaming, karaoke and music.

“The owner is in love with music,” and that is reflected inside the restaurant, Toms said. “Music will always be playing.”

A varied menu

The menu will offer a variety of barbecue, fried chicken, sandwiches and burgers, pizza, sides, salads, appetizers, dessert and brunch items, including:

  • From the Grill: Ribs, rib tips, beef Polish, smoked brisket, pork steak, turkey ribs, chicken wings, snoots;
  • Fish: Catfish, beer battered cod, beer battered shrimp, beer battered fish tacos, Cajun salmon;
  • Sandwiches: Grilled chicken club, BLT, smoked turkey club, Reuben, smash burgers;
  • Brunch: Buttermilk biscuits, breakfast wrap, chicken n’ waffles, shrimp & grits, stuffed French toast;
  • À la Carte: Loaded baked potato, loaded sweet potato, southwestern egg rolls, tacos, loaded nachos.

According to Toms, people are ready for the restaurant to open and have already been stopping by thinking it is open.

New business growth in west Belleville

Prior to Cupio’s, Steak ‘n Shake operated at 4320 W. Main St., opening in 1974. The restaurant closed in January 2019 for maintenance and remodeling and never reopened.

Cupio’s will be the second restaurant on West Main Street to open this year. I Don’t Know Restaurant & Grill welcomed its first customers in mid-June at a former Taco Bell building located at 4004 W. Main St.

In addition to new developments on West Main Street, Belleville is seeing new businesses open in the area, including Banana Leaf Thai Cuisine at 3030 Frank Scott Parkway West, Suite 11, and a Regions Bank branch at 5401 North Belt West.

Multiple new businesses are also open in Belleville Crossing, including Bath & Body Works, Verizon, Smoke World Vape and Velora Beauty, which relocated North Belt West. Construction projects are underway for Discount Tire, Plaza Tire Service, Mi Nail and Ross Dress for Less.
