Coronavirus kills a Monroe County man as the region’s death toll continues to rise

A man in his 80s is the first coronavirus-positive patient to die from the virus in Monroe County.

Monroe County Health Department Administrator John Wagner announced the man’s death on Tuesday afternoon.

It brings the total of COVID-19 deaths in southwestern Illinois to six, with four previously reported in St. Clair County, and Madison County’s first fatality Tuesday.

Wagner also announced two new cases in Monroe County, bringing the county’s total of positive cases to 16. The two new patients are a woman in her 80s and a woman in her 60s. Details about how the patients contracted the virus or if there were pre-existing health conditions were not provided.
