Madison County woman becomes the sixth coronavirus death in southwestern Illinois

An 86-year-old woman is the first coronavirus-positive patient to die from the virus in Madison County.

The Madison County Coroner’s Office notified the Madison County Health Department of her death on Tuesday afternoon, a news release from the county stated.

Details about possible pre-existing health conditions were not provided in the release.

The woman’s death brings the total of COVID-19 deaths in southwestern Illinois to six, with four previously reported in St. Clair County and one reported in Monroe County earlier Tuesday afternoon.

“On behalf of the Madison County officials, we extend our deepest sympathies to the woman’s loved ones during this time of loss,” Madison County Chairman Kurt Prenzler said. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends and neighbors who are grieving.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, Madison County has reported 66 positive cases of coronavirus, including the death.
