Southwestern Illinois counties announce at least 131 new COVID cases, 1 death Saturday

Click to read COVID-19 updates for your county:

At least 131 more metro-east residents have contracted the coronavirus, according local officials.

St. Clair County officials reported 64 new cases of the coronavirus and one more death on Saturday.

The novel coronavirus causes COVID-19, a respiratory disease. County leaders said Saturday that a man in his 70s with underlying health conditions died from the disease.

Elsewhere in the metro-east, there were 54 new COVID-19 diagnoses in Madison County, eight in Monroe County and five in Randolph County.

All five of Randolph County’s new diagnoses Saturday were from Menard Correctional Center, a prison in Chester, according to the health department.

The state defines the metro-east as St. Clair, Madison, Clinton, Randolph, Monroe, Bond and Washington counties. None of the other counties in the region had reported changes to their coronavirus statistics on Saturday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced on Saturday that the metro-east region’s positivity rate increased slightly from 9.3% on Tuesday to 9.4% on Wednesday. The positivity rate is the percentage of coronavirus tests performed that were positive. The rate the state calculates is based on a week’s worth of tests.

It is a metric state officials use to decide whether to impose restrictions on businesses and activities in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading.

Illinois provides the rate for each region at dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics. Information on the website is delayed by three days, so Wednesday, Sept. 2, was the latest date available on Saturday.

St. Clair County’s latest rundown

St. Clair County has now recorded a total of 6,231 COVID-19 cases and 176 deaths since the coronavirus pandemic began.

The daily positivity rate dropped from 6.5% on Friday to 4.3% on Saturday. The daily positivity rate is the percentage of positives from a day’s worth of coronavirus tests.

The county’s seven-day positivity rate is 6.5% — an average from the past week.

Officials said Saturday that 56 people were receiving treatment for COVID-19 in St. Clair County hospitals, an increase of four patients from Friday’s total. Two patients are on ventilators, officials said.

The newly diagnosed St. Clair County residents ranged in age from under 10 years old to their 80s. Most of them were in their 30s or younger.

Two cases of the virus were reported Saturday at long-term care facilities in St. Clair County: one at Apieron Care Center in Mascoutah and one at Lebanon Care Center.

The county reported a daily positivity rate of 8.12% on Saturday, an increase from 3.72% on Friday. The seven-day positivity rate in Madison County was 7.89% as of Saturday.

The latest residents to be diagnosed with COVID-19 ranged in age from 10 years old to their 90s. A little over half of them were in their 40s or younger.

Officials said 32 people were hospitalized in Madison County, and five of the patients were on ventilators.

Illinois reports new cases, deaths

A total of 248,177 Illinois residents have now been diagnosed with COVID-19, and 8,166 people have died. More than 4.3 million tests have been conducted for COVID-19, with 61,935 of those tests being reported within the last 24 hours.

Southwestern Illinois COVID-19 statistics

ZIP code-level numbers below are provided by the state each afternoon at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/covid19-statistics. Madison and Macoupin counties compile their own statistics by ZIP code later in the day, so the numbers may differ from what appears on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website. The Belleville News-Democrat reports the information county health departments provide.

ZIP codes with fewer than five cases of the virus are not reported by health officials. The number in parentheses after each ZIP code below reflects the change from the previous day’s cumulative total. A decrease reflects a correction.

All other information comes from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure refers to the number of people who completed the required isolation period in most counties.
