Seven new COVID-19 deaths announced as metro-east positivity rate continues to rise
Seven additional COVID-19 deaths were reported in the metro-east Tuesday due to COVID-19.
The deaths were in Madison, St. Clair and Clinton counties. Officials said three people in Madison County died due to COVID-19, including a man and a woman, both in their 70s, and a man in his 80s. In St. Clair County, a woman in her 60s and a man in his 90s died.
No additional information was released about the two people who died in Clinton County.
St. Clair County has now reported 178 deaths and Madison County has reported 108. Clinton County has reported 19.
Meanwhile, the Region 4 positivity rate continued to rise Tuesday, reaching 9.8%, up from 9.6% Monday. The rate has increased for five consecutive days. The positivity rate is the percentage of coronavirus tests that were positive. The rate the state calculates is based on a week’s worth of tests.
It is a metric state officials use to decide whether to impose restrictions on businesses and activities in an effort to prevent the virus from spreading.
The state defines the metro-east, or Region 4, as St. Clair, Madison, Clinton, Randolph, Monroe, Bond and Washington counties.
Illinois provides the rate for each region at dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics. Information on the website is delayed by three days, so Saturday, Sept. 5, was the latest date available on Tuesday.
As of 6 p.m., 230 new positive tests of COVID-19 had been reported in Region 4. St Clair County reported 50 new cases, Madison County, 75 cases; Clinton County, 57 cases; Monroe County, 11 cases; Washington County, 13 cases; Randolph County, four cases, and Bond County, 20 cases.
Regionally, 30% of the metro-east’s hospital beds were occupied and 41% of its ICU beds were occupied, according to the state.

Southwestern Illinois COVID-19 statistics
ZIP code-level numbers below are provided by the state each afternoon at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/covid19-statistics. Madison and Macoupin counties compile their own statistics by ZIP code later in the day, so the numbers may differ from what appears on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website. The Belleville News-Democrat reports the information county health departments provide.
ZIP codes with fewer than five cases of the virus are not reported by health officials. The number in parentheses after each ZIP code below reflects the change from the previous day’s cumulative total. A decrease reflects a correction.
All other information comes from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure refers to the number of people who completed the required isolation period in most counties.
