MLK Bridge to reopen Wednesday after two years of construction, delays

After two years, the Martin Luther King Bridge that connects St. Louis and southern Illinois will reopen Wednesday, reports state.

The bridge will reopen for morning traffic, the Illinois Department of Transportation told TV station KMOV 4 on Monday.

In June, IDOT spokesperson Joel Cumby said that the reopening was “close.”

The bridge closed in August 2018 for extensive repairs to its roadway and ramps. The 2019 Illinois budget allocated more than $36 million to demolish an old truss bridge on the ramp leading to the MLK Bridge. It was to reopen in fall 2019.

The bridge reopening encountered many delays, however, including flooding, most recently.

In June, Cumby said that IDOT was “sincerely” sorry for the delays in the project.
