‘He was a good person’: Funeral services set for Shiloh man killed in crash
Jason Hamed said his nephew, Jalal Hamed, meant the world to his family. Hearing from the police Sunday that it was Jalal who died in a crash on Interstate 55 in East St. Louis was “shocking.”
“The entire family is devastated,” Jason Hamed said.
Jalal Hamed, 29, of Shiloh died in a crash Sunday morning when he was in an Infiniti on the southbound Interstate 55 exit ramp to Interstate 64, authorities said. The Infiniti overturned and became engulfed in flames, Illinois State Police said in a news release.
“They are too distraught to talk right now,” Jason Hamed said of his nephew’s parents.
“His mother can’t speak right now. She is just devastated over the loss of her only son,” he said.
Jalal Hamed apparently was driving to work at a convenience store, his uncle said.
“It is a big, big, loss. He’s the only son to his father. He is in so much pain,” Jason Hamed said.
“Everywhere in the community there is shock. We lost a very young man in an accident.”
Jalal Hamed was born in St. Louis County and his parents are Palestinian Americans. Jason Hamed said Jalal Hamed’s dad came to the United States 32 years ago.
“The kid was raised right. Everybody loves him,” he said. “He was a good person.”
The funeral prayer for Jalal Hamed will be at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Dar Al-Jalal Mosque at 8545 Dunn Road in Hazelwood, Missouri.
His burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery at 2099 Pennsylvania Ave. off St. Charles Rock Road in St. Louis County. The family will arrive at the cemetery at 2 p.m.
