Crews patch, plan repairs after North Green Mount Road in Shiloh buckles
An area of North Green Mount Road in Shiloh was temporarily closed Wednesday after buckling occurred in the road between Frank Scott Parkway East and Cascade Lake Drive.
Shiloh Mayor Bob Weilmuenster said the area was temporarily patched on Wednesday and again Thursday morning. The St. Clair County Highway Department will make more permanent repairs that include saw-cutting the area and patching it next week, according to Weilmuenster.
The road reopened Wednesday evening after initial repairs. The cause of the damage is not known at this time; however, Weilmuenster said the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency would continue to provide updates.
Messages left with the village’s public works department, County Engineer Norm Etling, and St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency Director Herb Simmons were not immediately returned.
Weilmuenster said he, Etling and County Board Chairman Mark Kern were at the site Thursday morning to assess the damage. Police officers directed traffic as additional repairs were made.
Kern asked the community for patience during repairs in a public statement on Thursday.
“In between scheduled resurfacing or annual oil/chipping, roads do have unexpected issues. It happens,” Kern wrote. “Please be patient when a temporary fix is needed.”
The Shiloh Police Department published an image of the damage shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday and advised drivers to avoid the area. At 5 p.m., the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency provided an update, stating the road closure expanded to include North Green Mount Road from Frank Scott Parkway East to Lebanon Avenue. The road reopened by 6:30 p.m.
In addition to the emergency repairs where the road is buckling, Weilmuenster said construction will soon begin to widen North Green Mount between Frank Scott Parkway East and Lebanon Avenue. Officials are finalizing easement plans for some properties along the road.
