Victim identified in weekend stabbing in Belleville
The man who died after police found him wounded in a home in Belleville over the weekend has been identified.
Terrance Cherry, 31, was pronounced dead at 3:48 a.m. on Saturday at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye said.
Cherry was transported to the hospital after Belleville police officers responded to a 911 call at a residence in the 2100 block of Scheel Street at 2:57 a.m. on Saturday and found him bleeding from an injury the torso.
According to a deputy coroner at Dye’s office, an autopsy was conducted Sunday but it is still unclear what was used to stab Cherry.
A 27-year-old woman who was on scene at the home was taken into police custody, but was later released without charges when the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office took the case under advisement. Her identity has not been released.
In a statement over the weekend, Belleville police said the incident was “domestic in nature” and that they were not pursuing any other suspects.
Still, anyone with information regarding the incident can contact Belleville police at 618-234-1212.
