Separate Cahokia shootings leave man dead, 16-year-old injured

Cahokia police arrested a man at the scene of a shooting that left a 30-year-old man dead Friday night.

Officers were sent to the 1300 block of Richard Drive where they found the victim, who St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified as John A. Fosnock of Judith Drive in Cahokia.

Police have not released the name of the man in custody pending the ongoing investigation.

Cahokia Police Capt. Dennis Plew said Fosnock was shot and killed inside a residence.

“We have a subject detained for questioning. We are still working to sort everything out,” Plew said.

“We are talking to other people who were in the residence at the time of the shooting and we are checking the area for video surveillance footage.”

While officers were investigating the death, police received a second call of about a juvenile who had been shot on St. Bartholomew Drive in the St. Louis Gardens subdivision. Plew said the 16-year-old boy was hit when somebody fired into a crowd of about 80 gathered at a memorial vigil.

The boy was treated at an area hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening, Plew said.

“There was a vigil in the area for a woman who recently passed away,” said Plew. “It appears shots were fired towards the gathering of approximately 80 people. Someone possibly returned gunfire from the crowd.

“Things got chaotic when people started running and screaming. At the end of all that, a 16-year old male was left shot.”

Both incidents remain under investigation.
