A 32-year old woman was hit by a stray bullet as she sat in her car with her 7-year-old child Tuesday.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a St. Louis hospital with “serious injuries” said East St. Louis Police Sgt. Cantrell Patterson. The child was not injured.

Police were dispatched to 75th Street at 6:47 p.m. on the report that shots had been fired.

When officers arrived, they found a female sitting inside an SUV who had b even shot,” Patterson said.

The woman was eastbound at the intersection of 75th and Eureka.

“Initially, paramedics rendered aid to the victim, then she was taken by ambulance to a St. Louis hospital for further medical treatment,” Patterson said.

Patterson said police believe the injured woman was not the target. Based on shell casings found at the scene, the bullet appears to have been fired from an assault rifle, he said.
