A second East St. Louis man killed in hit-and-run in Sauget

For the second time in as many days, an East St. Louis man was the victim of a hit-and-run in Sauget.

This time, a man was struck by a car while riding his bicycle on Falling Springs Road near Monsanto Avenue at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday, Sauget Police Chief James Jones said.

Kiefer Childress, 59, 450 N. Sixth Street, was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Friday, said St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

“We located an unresponsive subject laying in the the middle of the road and his damaged bicycle near him,” Jones said. “The bicycle was crushed. It appeared it had been run over.”

Less then a quarter mile away and shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, Thomas Emanuel Williams, also 59, of the 3100 block of Trendley Ave. in East St. Louis, was struck by a silver passenger vehicle that fled the scene. He died at the scene about 30 minutes after police reponded.

The area where the two incidents occurred is dark and poorly lit, which may complicate the investigation, Jones said.

“It is the back side of Eastman Chemical building. It is dark in that area,” Jones said. “We do not have any suspects and we don’t know what kind of vehicle we are looking for at this time.

“We are poking for surveillance in the area and any witnesses who may have seen anything.”

Illinois State Police accident reconstruction unit was called to process the scene.

Anyone with information regarding this hit-and-run incident is asked to call the Sauget Police Department at 618-337-5267.
